I stumbled upon Sugarbloom's Tall Cupcake Tutorial and was so amazed with the new take on the classic cupcake. I had to give it a try! Such a sweet find shouldn't be kept a secret and everyone should go check it out and give it a try. I love this especially because they are filled in frosting. :)

I did one of my hardest but very fun cakes by far this weekend. It was for my cousin's daughter's 4th birthday. Her request, a tangled cake. My only regret is that I wish I had taken step by step pictures to show you how this cake came together. Oh well, maybe next time I can get someone to just take pictures of the process for me.
A brief explanation on how I did the cake. I got a 12 inch board which was going to be my base. I then got a 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe cut down to my desired length of the tower. I then attached a flange to the board, that way it was easy to attach my pvc pipe to it. I baked a 10 inch vanilla cake and made a hole where the pvc pipe would go. I frosted and covered it in green fondant and placed it on my base. I then covered the pvc pipe with rice krispies adding more to the top and bottom to give the pipe that tower look. I covered the middle of the pipe in fondant airbrushed to look like brick then placed the pipe between the cake (connected to the flange). When the pipe was connected to the bottom flange I covered the whole pipe in fondant then made tears where I wanted the brick colored fondant to show. Since this cake would be traveling 3 hours to get to its final destination I decided for stability reasons to make the top tower out of rice krispies and not cake. On top of a 6 inch board I made the tower out of rice krispies and the top of of an icecream cone with added fondant to give the the final shape. I covered it all in fondant. I made little fondant squares for the shingles to go on the top of the tower. Just putting on the shingles took about an hour. I then colored the fondant black where my windows were going to be. I then began to add all the buttercream detail like the brown around the tower and the green leaves scattered in groups. I had tiny fondant flowers from a previous cake and added those on to the cake. The trees were out of fondant but I didn't like the way they looked so went over it with buttercream and a leaf tip. Pascal was made out of fondant by my sister then the happy birthday message was added. Now for the last bit to make it an actual tangled cake, I printed out the image of Rapunzel and Flynn out of edible image paper and placed them on the main window. I placed the 6 inch board holding the top of the tower on the pvc pipe and tada it was done. Without further ado I present to you the tangled tower cake. This giant cupcake was done for my cousin's daughter's birthday. The cake had to travel 6 hours but I am glad to say it made it. The cake is red velvet and the cupcake liner was made out of chocolate. The fondant cherry covered in disco dust was just the extra flare the cake needed. ^_^
I got asked to do a groom's cake, Dallas Cowboys themed, to show off in front of his NFC East rival friends. :) The cake was red velvet with cream cheese filling. Yum!
Football was made out of rice krispie treats. My sisters's birthday is coming up and she was having a hard time deciding on what flavor she wants for her cake. So, I did a test cake for her. It gave me an excuse to try out a fun new cake design. The cake is a double chocolate cake with raspberry filling and raspberry buttercream. Needless to say, it was a hit!
Love the Xbox cake but is it too much cake for you? Here is an alternative, Xbox game cakes.
This weekend I did 2 birthday cakes for 2 different people and oddly enough they wanted just about the same kind of decorations. They both wanted the color palette to be black, pink and white, with zebra stripes and their name on the cake. This first cake was for my cousin, Yazmin, she turned 19 and wanted zebra, and cheetah print on her cake topped with a bow. I made her draw her cake out the way she wanted it. This is what she drew, well I did make a few changes but needles to say she LOVED it! :) This cake was done for a co-workers mom who was celebrating her 50th birthday. There was a grand opening of a restaurant today, Tres Mexican Restaurant, and I made cupcakes to celebrate. And it being a mexican restaurant what better way to top the cupcakes then with a chile. :) Aren't they spicy . . . lol Verenice was the receiver of the wonderful graduation cake! She is a high school graduate who was in cosmetology. The cake, chocolate, her favorite. Accessories on the cake include, scissors, comb, nail polish, nail file, eye shadow and brush and lipstick and even an edible picture of the graduate herself. All completely edible! Congratulations on your graduation Verenice! |
